The Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) today mourns the passing of former-Protea’s cricketer John Waite.
"John has tread deep footprints in the history of Gauteng (formerly Transvaal) cricket in his lifetime," said Cassim Docrat, CEO of the GCB. "Not only did he represent us on a national level, he was a leader on the field as Transvaal captain and kept on being involved on an administrative level until his death. He was deeply concerned with the transformation of cricket in this province and was continually putting his efforts towards this cause. John was highly respected both as a player and an administrator."
Waite was again recognized for his contribution to Gauteng Cricket in February when he was re-affirmed as Honorary Life Vice-President. "South Africa has lost one of the finest wicket-keeper batsman ever produced. His 'gentleman-approach' on the field will always be remembered and sets the standard for our up and coming cricketers," said Ray Mali, Chairperson of the GCB.
A wake for the cricket community will be held at the Long Room at Bidvest Wanderers on Saturday, 25 June 2011 at 12:00.
